428 ITALIAN THEATRES ARE CLOSED, MANY FALLING INTO DISUSE - Chiusi 428 teatri italiani, molti dei quali in disuso
The Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini has announced an Italian contribution to the reconstruction of the Mariupol theatre.

While this positive gesture of solidarity has been welcomed, journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, in next week’s episode of the television programme Report, will look at the Italian theatres that are closed with many becoming derelict. 428 in all are closed, half of which are publicly owned by the state or local councils.
Mentre questo positivo gesto di solidarietà è stato accolto favorevolmente, il giornalista Sigfrido Ranucci, nella puntata della prossima settimana del programma televisivo Report, guarderà ai teatri italiani chiusi e molti abbandonati. 428 in tutto sono chiusi, la metà dei quali sono di proprietà pubblica dello Stato o dei consigli locali.

No one knows the cost of this abandoned historical and architectural cultural heritage as the Directorate General for Entertainment of the Ministry of Culture has no recent survey. The department has financed €420 million for performances in 2022, but nothing at all for infrastructure. The separate Reconstruction and Resilience Plan in Italy has not allocated anything for theatres, and many are waiting to collapse.
Nessuno conosce il costo di questo patrimonio culturale storico e architettonico abbandonato in quanto la Direzione Generale dello Spettacolo del Ministero della Cultura non ha un'indagine recente. Il dipartimento ha finanziato 420 milioni di euro per gli spettacoli nel 2022, ma niente per le infrastrutture. Il Piano separato Ricostruzione e Resilienza in Italia non ha stanziato nulla per i teatri, e molti aspettano di crollare.
Italy has more theatres than any other country because even a small town would have its theatre, often small proscenium arch theatres, with boxes, frescoes, and a chandelier, just as it would have its castle, town square and church. The Unification of Italy did not come about until the mid-19th century and so many regions were competing to boast the highest tower or largest cupola, and theatres were central to Italian cultural life and they were the object of civic pride.
L'Italia ha più teatri di qualsiasi altro paese perché anche una piccola città avrebbe il suo teatro, spesso piccoli teatrini ad arco di boccascena, con palchi, affreschi e un lampadario, proprio come avrebbe il castello, la piazza e la chiesa. L'Unità d'Italia si ebbe solo verso la metà dell'Ottocento e tante regioni si contendevano la torre più alta o la cupola più grande, i teatri erano al centro della vita culturale italiana ed erano oggetto di orgoglio civico.
Not all the 428 theatres are architectural gems, but many need to be protected before they disappear. Maintaining them is expensive, but many restored theatres have found a new life by combining live performances with conferences and video events.
Non tutti i 428 teatri sono gioielli architettonici, ma molti hanno bisogno di essere protetti prima che scompaiano. La loro manutenzione è costosa, ma molti teatri restaurati hanno trovato una nuova vita combinando spettacoli dal vivo con conferenze ed eventi video.
